how can you idetifi a gold seal engine for cc size as we collected one to day but definatly came out of morris car but cc not known ,my mate intends to put in austin A35 with electric pump as no prvision for mechanical pump we think it is 948 but not sure, also i bought a crank which appears to be in good condition again not sure what size engine it is from thanks,,grandad

there are no marks in the casting or any where else

948 engine would be marked '950' on the side of the block (near the fuel pump mounting hole). Take the rocker cover off - what casting number shows on the head ? If 12G202 then it's a 1098 head - and therefore 'likely' to be a 1098 engine ! There are other clues - but best bet is to lift the head - and measure the bores!

803 has bypass oil filter. 948 has metal oil filler cap. 1098 has plastic filler cap although these could of course have been changed.
Tappet chest cover centres slope outwards on the 803 and 948 and inwards on the 1098. The 1275 doesn't have covers.

think we got it down to 1098,, needs shells but seems ok other than that, but now been offerd 948 thats good so he is putting that one in thankyou to those who helped identifie ,, went with12g202 on head under rocker cover i supose some of these engines are a bit mix and match..grandad

Well - these 1098 engines seem to be fetching good money at the moment - so don't scrap it!
