Im pretty sure the engine has to come out from underneath on the A35 grandad, as for the boxes, they are presumably the same but with different clutch release mechanisms, I think they are interchangeable but might be wrong.

Last one I did was lifted out - more room than you think.

Check the gearbox tail shaft length. I think they may be different.
I saw a very well sorted 1275cc A 35 at the Cowley (Oxford) car rally the other week.

Found this, as I can't remember if I separated box from engine before lifting it out (30 years ago).
I do remember thinking that there was plenty room for something bigger.

Boxes are the same !
Only the 948 was fitted in the A35 I think? So yes the 948 Minor box will fit into the A35, so long as you use the A35 clutch fork.

The 1098 box will not fit a 948 of any type without changing the gearbox front cover for a 948 version - needs two holes plugged and two holes drilled and tapped in the gearbox casing. The front cover heights are different to suit the different size clutches.

The box will fit ok - but as Richard points out, you will need to modify it to get the clutch working correctly. But - that may not be necessary if you use a 1098 flywheel and clutch (on either the 948 engine, or on a 1098/1275 engine). Depends if you can get the A35 clutch mechanism to fit the clutch fork on the gearbox.

I don't think the 1098 flywheel will fit a 948 'box, I was told it's too large.

Yes indeed - this was if using a 1098 ribbed case box!
