QANTAS Hangar Open Day

Post by ferret76 »

G'day All,
My club (the Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Club) held an open day at our club rooms on the weekend. It was a good day with quite a few punters in to look at our collection that consists of numerous classics, stationary engines, steam engines and memorabilia. Our club room is an old QANTAS hangar, built in 1934 and is quite historic in itself. It has seen the like of Amy Earhart, Amy Johnson, Bert Hinkler, Charles Kingsford-Smith, Hudson-Fysh and many other pioneering aviators. It was the spot where the first flight from the UK landed in a Vickers Vimy. It was also the site of QANTAS' first overseas departure flight, Being Darwin to Singapore in 1935. It survived 64 Japanese air raids 1942-43 and Cyclone Tracy, Christmas Eve 1974 that destroyed the city of Darwin for the third time in 60 years.
Anyway, enjoy the photos, especially of the Traveller that turned up on the day.
Image
Must have been lots of work to make that front panel 'belly out' like that - i'm sure there will be a good reason hidden inside!

I couldn't get a look under the bonnet unfortunately, but I'm led to believe it has a Mazda plant under there. Including an air conditioner. It was a very well turned out car, amazing what money can do!
