Cylinder head

Post by alzax3 »

In amongst a pile of spares I got with our Traveller was a cylinder head that the seller said was a from 'Mini'. I was looking at it today and noticed that it was cast without provision for the waterpump bypass pipe, and it looks to have inserted valve seats. Does that make it an unleaded head? is there any way of identifying it from its cast in numbers? (8A7 next to the thermostat housing, CAM4813 in the centre of the rockers) And what about capacity - is the head the same for all CC's with the difference in the bores or are the heads different too?

There - a whole pile of questions really  but perhaps I'll have to join a Mini forum to get the answers?

No the heads are different to match the bores otherwise the gases would have a nice step to try and work their way round.

It's an unleaded head from a 998 Mini. Would be fine on a 948 Morry engine. The chamber capacity does vary from engine to engine. You 'could' use it on a 1098 engine - but the inlet valves and inlet air passageways are smaller than the 12G202 head on a 1098 engine - however it will run perfectly well if it's just for pottering around.

Thanks for that, no, I won't hobble a 1098 with it then, but it's nice to know what it is!

Good 'unleaded' head for a 948 engine - may be of interest to some on here!

There is one doing quite well on fleebay at the moment - might be worth sticking it on there?

Happy to - any idea what it's worth? (no valves/rockers but has the twin outlet thermostat housing) - I also have a brand new Metro water pump to suit (without the bypass tube)

Link to head on fleebay - not the same as yours but might give an idea of what people will pay. Might be nice to offer it out here a bit cheaper first.....? Our 950 had a receipt for a fitted unleaded head when we bought it which cost nearly £300.00 !!!

Ahhh - you didn't say 'no valves' before ! To be used 'unleaded' it needs the correct later Mini harder exhaust valves and they have different cotters and caps. Any inlets can be used, but the exhaust bits will add up to a bit extra!
