does a midget gearbox fit 1098 engine

Yes. Though I believe the clutch release bearing or arm is a different size due to the different clutch.

I find the the closer ratioes of the Spritget box are better suited for a Moggie. It reduces some of the space between 2nd and 3rd. I've done it on a 948, but I'm sure it would apply to 1098 engines as well even though BMC changed 2nd a bit.
Back in the seventies when putting in a 1275 Spritget was the thing to do, I think the change in the gearbox was much of the enjoyed benefit but never really acknowledged.

hello kevin the car is still for sale and i have just had a very good gearbox fitted in her but i was offered one that is suposadly reconditioned actualy it is free so i thought i would pick it up the gearbox i have just had put in mine was sold as unown condition i took a chance with it and its very good that cost me £25 to buy . i still have old one free if any one can collect it , noisy in ist second , comes out of second on deceleration . but would be ok for a rebuild if some one wants it .thanks grandad,

The difference between the morris minor gearbox and the sprite/midget gearbox is that the clutch fork comes out the right side instead of the left....hmm now im confused because you all have left hand drives. In the states anyway, to use a spridget box you have to replace the front cover. This requires drilling 2 holes and filling 2 holes with set screws.

Errr. no, we have right hand drives. You have left hand drive.

Mind you I suppose it depends if you are sat in the car or stood in front of it.

yeah sorry, i meant you guys have right hand drives. The clutch fork will be different, but in my opinion is actually a better design for mechanical clutch.

A 1098 Spridget gearbox will fit straight on to a Minor 1098 engine after swapping the hydraulic clutch fork for the standard 1098 Minor fork. A 1275 box may also fit after changing the arm as well.

If it's a smoothcase 948 box, that will require the front cover to be changed and holes drilled/plugged as Downsey suggests. Same applies if fitting a 1098/1275 box to a 948 engine.

There are different front covers for left and right hand versions of the boxes - to put the clutch mech at the appropriate side. It's not anything to do with being a 1098 or a 1275 box!

BMC,

The are actually 4 different front covers! 948 LHD, 948 RHD, 1098/1275 LHD and 1098/1275 RHD. Whether LHD or RHD, the 948 front cover is different to the 1098/1275 to accomodate the much smaller and thinner 6 1/4" clutch. When they introduced the ribcase box, the hole pattern for the front cover changed at the same time, but is still the same for LHD and RHD, which means that a 948 cover cannot be fitted straight on to a 1098/1275 case. 2 holes have to be plugged and 2 new holes drilled and tapped, whichever way round the change is made!
