Do you mean the little alloy lock lever? IIRC there's a spring pin on the latch body that you have to pull out.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

If you are talking about a 2 door, you must reach up inside and pull that wire clip out. It's close to the inner panel and pulls down.

its a late 2 door
there is no clip, nor on my spare handle either

the only clip is on the vertical bar that goes up and down for the latch action

Mine was the same, the manual states that there is a spring clip but it was wasn't there! There seems to be some sort of locating pin on the end of the latch, as I was waggling it about, it came out, or perhaps my spring was missing!

Dennis, do not pull out any wire ,clip or other fitting.
With the door cars removed take a fine flat screw driver and feel for a recess in the body of the latch. Its difficult to see so feel is best. There is a spring loaded plunger that needs to be pressed into the latches body, this done the latch will simply release.
The plunger itself is probably ony 2-3mm in diameter so difficult for us 'oldies ' to even see it, let alone contort our bodies, to be in a position to do so.

My 1963 Trav has a spring clip. Perhaps they changed it later.

Thinking about it again, thats probably what I did (by accident!) and the lever came out.
