Cheers Richard, food for thought there.
my engine was running cool with a drilled thermostat in place (one 6mm hole) had to fit a 88 degree undrilled stat to get it up to temp, mind you I'm still running it in, I also have a pump with the larger impeller that's probably be making things cooler.

I have tried drilling a hole in the thermostat & blocking the bypass before it took alot longer to warm up & ran too cool in winter as always flowing through rad. when normal stat & bypass unblocked the temp was alot more stable with a roasty toasty heater now :)

6mm hole is too big in the stat! I had a single 3mm hole in 72 degree stat for summer - but in winter used an 88 stat -with no hole, and heater obviously constantly open. Great warm up - heater started working within 1/4 mile, and absolutely no overheating problems on a very modified 1340 - in a Mini with the small Mini radiator! Minor radiator is huge by comparsion.
As for 'slow warm up' - maybe depends where the temp gauge pick-up was placed ? If in the head it should have shown pretty quick warm-up, but of course if in the thermostat cover it would only show once the stat opened.
