finally some progress!

Post by youngun »

Due to home building works etc i have made very little progress on the morris these last few months! Still, today i got it rolled over onto its side, leaving me with a lot to be getting on with.
What do the experts think then?

I'm no expert, but it looks like you are near to the end of the welding. The RHS floor edge panels and sill pieces are tacked on, these need to be seam welded, and lots of underseal and rust removal to be done! The front inner wings look good, usually the bump stop has rusted out on project cars, yours look good!

Thats all on the to do list john, i bought a big tin of seam sealer today so thats off the list.
I got the last bits of boot floor done today, in hindsight i would have bought a full length repair section. Still, you learn!

Some nasty little bits were discovered when wire brushing today, so those will be done tommorrow, followed by a lot of seam welding!

Looking good - hope you know exactly where the spring hangers for the rear springs go!

It looks like the rear spring hanger chassis legs are on there!

But not the front mounts! Ok - maybe they are not strictly 'hangers' - I should have said 'brackets' ! Forgive me - it was late !!

Look here http://s166.photobucket.com/albums/u118 ... y08002.jpg

front spring hangers are in place as well as the rears. Looks like YG has used the nice spring hanger on a plate repair sections.

Lucky the front floor pans look good. I would advise however, removing the exhaust heat shield as these tend to be rust traps. YG you may find rust under the heat shield, but its acceptable to do a local repair here. I just did one on the project convertible and managed to stamp the recesses in the repair section with a jig and blunted chisel- crude but effective.

It looks like one side of the central cross member is de-laminating across the flange on one side. While the car is replaced, I would chop out the cross member and replace the whole thing, if I was you.

That will all be dealt with tommorrow. Im working from the back to the front.
Today I got the offside sill section and spring hanger all seam welded, and did the crossmember end.

Its a wonder you havent got weld splatter on your camera lense but your pictures have been and are so helpful and an inspiration to know someone has more rust than I have (so far) and has got as far as you have  I just wish my welding was as pretty :-? I noticed some pictures of a pink lady who looks quite dry inside but in need of some major TLC, are you thinking of doing it all again? :o

Ah yes - I see the hangers/brackets in that view now!! Hope they are correctly placed - I suspect whoever did my Traveller many years ago has placed them slightly too far forward - hence even with new springs it sits slightly 'low'.

Thats good work , youngun, the only think I would have done differently is to butt more of the repair sections up, I see you have a few overlaps near the spring hanger area. Make sure you apply plenty of seam sealer underneath here and plenty of underbody wax from beneath and cavity wax from above. These overlapped sandwiches can act as big rust traps, believe me, I have made the same mistakes mtself.

I tried to avoid overlapping as much as possible. But is was unavoidable or indeed uneconomical to do so in a few places! That spring hangar overlap is only a couple of mm anyway, and has been seam welded today along with other bits like the floor pan section.
Tommorrow its crossmember time then onto cleaning, then chassis leg time!

This is easily corrected by fitting longer shackle plate hangers at the rear of the spring. I believe JLH do them, but they are easy to cut out of 3mm plate steel.

Pretty easy to tell if the hangers are in the wrong place. With new springs, the rear shackle plates should be almost vertical with the car on it's wheels and unladen.

Longer shackle plates have the added advantage of moving the rear spring eye further away from the chassis leg. Contact here, can lead to bad rust, as the eye rubs away any protective coatings.

Ahh ive got my hangers right then, i offered up a spring....which im sure is the original and the shackle plates were just off the vertical.

Today i sorted out some rust on the crossmember and removed the waxoyl from the propshaft tunnel.

Hey YG its looking good,

I like the idea of putting the car on its side, I don't think I will be able to get Brenda on her side as my garage is only a single garage, but I think I will make do. Probably end up burning the hell out my arms lying on me back :-)

Good photos, mine has been so badly botched around the rear drivers floor pan, sill and rear inner wing area. Its like having to try and do an airfix kit without Instructions, However your photos really help please keep them coming so I can keep referring to them.

My question is now how far should I go, I have now uncovered more rot, I hear people referring to replacing cross members while they are there, but at what point do you decide it needs replacing? I don't want to have a car with all the work Ive done needing another go at it in a few years, if i can help it, but I also have to think about what can be done in the space I have, perhaps someone can come up with an Idea for getting her on her side and then getting her back in the garage??? :o
regards

Nigel

The way i see it is this......if theres rust, cut it out cut it out! You'll save yourself a lot of grief by replacing all the rust and crap now than by doing most of it then cutting more out later on.

My latest update: I had to put a new end on the offside chassis leg, a bit of fabrication was required, and i had to also replace a bit of the tie plate....this repair needs tidying up. I also removed the exhaust heat shield to discover more holes. So i cut back to good steel and am now halfway through welding those up. Im going to get the car onto the other side tommorrow to aid access to the nearside where i still have a bit of work to do.

these really are inspirational pictures. I've just my moggie onto a jig and will be rolling it over onto its side this week to assess extent of the rot. I'll post pictures when I can.
