Stainless chrome bits?

Post by Sidney'61 »

Hi all,
I've seen you can buy stainless steel wheel hubs and occassionally overriders from some minor places but does anybody know if I could get any other usually chromed bits in stainless (ie. bumpers, light fixings, etc..)
Thanks

Sorry no I've only heard of the stainless steel hubs caps - we have two sets on cars at present and they are v. good and the overriders. Many owner have other parts specially "chromed" but |I dont know of any having stainless steel. I think it would prove quite a costly exercise.

I do believe you can now get the chrome outer headlight rings in stainless steel, I have only seen them for sale at a rally stall. I have not seen them for sale with the big internet dealers yet.. :)

If you loaded the press that makes bumpers with stainless steel instead of mild steel would it make a stainless bumper or would the machine not be able to bend it?

Stainless steel is about 1.5 times harder to bend and has different bend characteristics. Chances are that some componenets could be formed by using the same tool but some would not come out the same shape.

Another issue with pressing Stainless would be your tooling would wear out quicker, so making each component more expensive again.

Another problem is the quality of Stainless, there are some grades of stainless that rust :o ( I'm sure someone has already mentioned the magnetic ones)
