half shafts

reading in the latest mag' the article was on about half shafts so is it possible to have my half shafts on my '56 splitty hardened or would I have to buy a new pair that are already hardened. incidentally they are performing fine at the moment , I am wondering if they break very often.

Eventually they go, usually at some inconvenient moment like trying to cross a busy roundabout, at which point you will lose all ability to move.

You can get hardened halfshafts, mine I believe are the same as on a land rover. Not sure whether it is possible to have existing ones hardened, suspect not.

if you get a harden one check if carefully. one I got was not true on the end and caused a wobbly wheel.

I would doubt the wisdom of 'hardening' an old half shaft. Unless you have considerable extra power and/or are vicious with the clutch the originals should be fine. If worried- - have them out and inspect the einner splines. If there is an obvious twist - then change them. And ALWAYS put the back on the same side they came out of.

Hardened shafts are an exchange item, so you wouldn't have to get yours hardened.

But - they are OLD shafts -and they will likely reject any twisted ones for exchange.
