carb set up

Post by muggwump »

Car is running a little lumpy and has a sooty exhaust. So was wondering if there is a guide to set up the carb. i.e which screws to turn and how far.
Only had the car a couple of weeks and haven't got around to getting a service manual yet

It's an HIF carb isn't it? That's not a standard Minor fitment so a Minor manual won't help you, but a Metro (or Ital?) one would.

If it's running rich then try turning the mixture screw anti-clockwise, say, half a turn and see how it feels and how the spark plugs look after a decent run. The mixture screw is towards the back, if you point a screwdriver from the wiper motor towards the carb it'll be that one. A rough-and-ready way to get the idle mixture about right is to tweak the screw for the fastest idle and then lean it off slightly until the revs start to drop. That's only any use if the carb is working as it should and doesn't have a worn jet, throttle spindle etc. which would affect the idle mixture differently from the part/full throttle mixtures.

I'm assuming the air cleaner is new and not causing the problem here.

First make sure the choke is going right off.
