Benny the trav - At last the work started!

Post by Mike Shipman »

Having seen so many fabbo Travs at the Dorset rally yesterday, the SADMOG mechanical numpty (me) has finally started on the jobs that have been outstanding on Benny for so long.

The work is as follows - bodywork first:
- replace rotten rear doors. Ive just this evening finished stripping and sanding the replacement doors I bought (a year or two ago  ), also drilled and filled the soft bit on the bottom of one door with loads of wood hardener. Ive also now got replacement hinges (from ebay), the old ones need to be cut off with a grinder

- Replace n/s waist rail (I bought a Steve Foreman piece off ebay some time ago)

- repair n/s wooden wheel arch pieces (hopefully can re-glue and screw if the wood is sound)

- fill and spray scratched wheel arch

- strip the rest of the woodwork, cuprinol and treat with Burgess 2 pack varnish - the wood looks OK in this pic - dont be fooled!.

- Replace bent rear bumper iron - on order from SADMOG Carlo, then I can fit my nice new b/w number plate and tow bar (bought a couple of years ago from SADMOG Rob)

- Do something with the nicotine stained headlining (anyone suggest any paint that'd stick to it?)

Then there are a few mechanical probs:
- grindy noise from dynamo (will fit an alternator eventually)
- graunchy noise from brakes - think the brake shoe is retracting far enough - the brakes are pulling to the right as well (need to look at the MMOC Servicing DVD again to check how to do this)

At the rate I'll be going that little lot will take best part of a year I reckon :o , but every journey starts with one step...here I go...!

Cheers, Mike

Re Headliner - I used artists acryllic from well known crafty shops. Ivory is a good match or you can use white. Many other colours available if you fancy something outrageous. Sponged it on with damp artists oil sponges. Took 3 coats all together and does actually look quite good... HTH, Rich

Unleaded fuel only? Do you have a catalytic converter?

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

I would worry about the brakes as the top priority - long before all the rest!

for the headlining ive had good results cleaning off cigerette stains with a paste made from; biological washing up powder and warm water.

p.s. if you get oil in your hair then the washing powder does a great job of getting it out but dont use much or itll burn!
