New owner in the USA

Post by Sandalwood »

Hello, all! I just acquired a right-hand drive 1961 Minor 1000 on Sunday, so I am brand new to Morris ownership and do not yet know where to obtain parts, or even if there are any clubs in the USA, etc. I look forward to learning more about my car by reading this forum, and hope to hear from any owners in the States. 8)

Welcome to the insane World of Morris Minors :D

Loads of parts suppliers here in the UK, the two main ones are listed in the links below.

Just have fun, that's the main thing.

Hi Sandalwood and welcome to the Board. I am not certain about clubs in your area of the States, but there's always someone here to help if you need it! As far as parts go we have many suppliers in the Uk who do mailorder throughout the World. If after a while you decide to join the Owners Club you will receive a Bi-monthly mag which gives details of all the suppliers. :D

Thanks for the welcome! I am also glad for the links for suppliers in the UK, although naturally a States-based vendor would be ideal. Freight from the UK isn't exactly cheap (as I once found out when shopping Cosworth parts a few years ago). I don't think very many Minors are on this side of the ocean, though.

My car was imported by a friend of mine. One family owned it from 1961 until 2004, and it was taken by them from England to New Zealand. It still has a 2003 New Zealand registration sticker in the window. My friend imported it on a ship with 53 Mini Coopers, and then decided he didn't really want to work on restoring the Minor. His loss, my gain!

Thanks for the welcome!

Yes, I am already having to tinker on it a bit. The previous owner had not driven her since February, and now the fuel pump appears to be on the fritz. I am going to check the contacts and maybe give it a light tap and see what happens.

In my experiance it needs a "heavy" tap :-)

Duly noted! I have a "California framing hammer" that should do the trick nicely. :)

Joking aside.... My wife's Minor had sat for 2 years without been started and although the pump ran (after a hard tap) it didn't run sufficiently enough to maintain the fuel level in the bowl. It would run for a mile or so then die and I had to get out, smack the pump and drive off again. Recon pump fitted and all is well now so the moral of the story I guess is that even if it looks like its running but you have problems, don't ignore the pump. Took me ages to figure that one out for myself :-(

Yes we have a club here in the States. Morris Minor Registry started in 1976 and shortly there after took in a couple of west coast clubs. You can contact Tony Burgess at E-mail MORRISMINR@AOL.COM. He is located in Ohio. I'm the tech man and I can be reached at jaekl@paonline.com. Mini Mania in CA and Mini City in NY are the stand by suppliers but many of the mechanicals are fairly available.
Welcome aboard. Minors get into your blood.

Excellent. Thanks for the fuel pump and USA club tips! I will follow up with both ASAP. I'm hoping to take my little Minor for its first drive tonight.
