Everlasting Exhaust. Interested?

Post by wanderinstar »

Do you enjoy changing you exhaust?
Do you enjoy shelling out for said exhaust?

Now please follow my thought patterns and see what you think. Exhaust systems corrode from inside as well as outside. Inside corrosion is caused bt the water vapour in the products of combustion (POC). Outsid corrosion cuased by roadsalt and general damp atmosphere under the car.
Does everyone agree so far?
A thought struck me yesterday while driving down from Inverness. What if we painted outside with heat resistant paint (Sperex?) and then totally wrapped the exhaust with that heat resistant tape that sports manifolds get wrapped in.
The paint to stop corrosion on outside and the insulating tape to keep the heat in the system. This in turn would stop condensation, as that is caused by heat loss allowing the water vapour in the POC to condense into water. Added bonuses would be noise reduction and heat reduction in the car.

Well that was my idea. Comments please.

"Heat resistant" paints are rubbish unless you shell out for the really decent stuff like POR-15 manifold paint. The heat rap is an interesting idea though, but overnight cooling etc would still lead to condensation.......
Ultimate rust cure for your moggy....paint it brown, at least that way you dont notice the rust as much!!

...and the wrap could well trap moisture from the road too

just get a stainless exhaust next time yours rots out? Going to be cheaper than the paint and wrap! and I agree... the wrap will trap moisture and rot the exhaust out paint or no paint...

Just get the exhaust ceramic coated inside and out.

Yeah, I can't afford it either...

Now that is something I didn't think of, do you know where you can get it done?

I agree Stainless is the best, but beware there are a million and one different types of stainless steel. The general rule, the more expensive the stainless the better the quality, beware, it can still corrode depending on the alloying elements. ;)
