popping out of 1st...

Post by callyspoy »

right, now my gearbox has popped out of first since i fitted it. well not really popped out, as it never popped in, it just slides in...and out again! now it is a pain in the bottom, but not a massive problem, but i am planning on going to cornwall this summer and it envolves a lot of first gear driving. therefore...small problem becomes a fairly major one!
so my question to you is this...
is there something that makes a gear "pop" in, if so, could that thing have become umpoppable, therefore making my pop non existent? if tehre is a thing that makes it do it, can it be replaced easyish, or will it be a gearbox out job. bear in mind its a 1275 midget, if that makes any difference!
thanks in advance!

Usually just wear and tear on the 1 st gear teeth (gear and laygear). Would need an expensive rebuild to fix it. Amazed you will need 1 st gear - it's normally just to get the car moving especially with a 1275 engine - it should lug up just about anything in 2 nd gear once moving. But plenty of used boxes about -I would start looking for a good one.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

when i opened up the gearbox when i had it off a couple of weeks ago the gears seemed fine, not chewed up at all. thats why it is odd. and i do need 1st as it has a low ratio diff, so has close to no "oomph" in second at low revs. and where i go is VERY hilly! ive got a 1098 box in the cellar here, but i was hoping that there was something that could be easily changed...

Have a word with John Evans, 02392 465256, 07776 381520. He has just rebuilt my 1275 box and may be able to answer your questions before you have to take the box out.

It's worn/damaged teeth! Change the box.

mike perry, do you live in this area or is a complete fluke that the number you have given me is a portsmouth number...
