What oil for an Ital A+?

I have some 20W50, but is just occurred to me to wonder if this is correct.

It seems as though the the engine might have had some upgrades - any idea if would that affect the oil grade?

Well its suggested either 15w40 or 15w50 to API SE or SF so it looks like a slightly thinner oil is suitable but I wonder how many are being run on 20w50 without problems, someone like Ray can probably explain the exact why's and wherefores.

hi i run a 1275 & 1360 both ital engines the chap which did work on my engine told me to use 20-50 older engines neads this thicker oil does do no harm use 20-50 oil touch wood i had none neil

Some searching found that A+ fitted to Metros wanted 15W40, so I bought a semi-synthetic version of that. I'll keep an eye on consumption and colour and change if it looks necessary.

You should stick to 20W50 - just be slightly cautious with revs in v cold weather until the engine warms - which is a rule with any engine anyway! The thinner oil was 'recommended' by manufacturers to help with fuel consumption tests - but all A series really are an old design with relatively large clearances and 20 W 50 is best. And they really don't warrant 'semi-synthetic' either! Just use the oil you have - and then move over to 20W50 for topping up.
