Alternator fitted as cheap as poss ????

Best bet is to get an alternator bracket from a late 70s Mini (not the A+ engine, but the A-series) then get an alternator from pretty much any Leyland car: Mini, Metro, MG, etc). Then get the plug that plugs into the back of the alternator from a metro (with about 1 metre of wire attached). Then you have pretty much all the bits for the conversion. You might have to play about to see which fanbelt fits, but just measure it with some string and then go into Halfords and find one the same size.

if you go ahead lee, make sure u get the wiring diagram, wen i got my moggy it had a brand alternator but on the 70 mile triop home the ignition stayed on, when i looked later it was still using the voltage regulater which is not needed, any way flat batterys called for new alternator and wirng pic from web ,sorted, steve

The belt from an 850 Mini fits - that's what came with my kit.

You can disconnect a couple of the wires from the regulator, but still leave it in place, just in case. Be sure to make the wires secure though.

The kit is £60 from Bull motif. By the time you've bought the alternator from a scrappy & a new belt you wonder if it's really worth all the chasing about.....

My lot came from an old Mini and cost £15 including the rear
mounting bracket. DO leave the control box in situ though
as it is a useful connection point. Follow the instructions in the
'technical tips' section.

ello lads, do the kits u get still use v.regulator as junc box? the wiring diagram i got from internet said its not used and it works ok, it may have been from MG or triumph,steve

From my understanding the voltage regulator is utilised as a junction box and redundant. The alternator has it's own built in regulation.

My settup is a scrapyard one from a Marina cost £10.00. I used a spare regulator as a junction box. I removed the internal workings and used the box as a junction box. I did not need to cut any wires doing it this way.
If I wanted to change it back to original it would be no problem.

If you buy a scrapyard alternater and it dies it can allway be used as a part exchange unit at most motor factors.

Have a look at http://marina.spares.me.uk/.

They should be able to supply all the bits need.

Leave the original regulator box in situ, the conversion only
involves removing some of the leads, and a couple of re-
connections(see tech tips). The Alternators have built-in
regulators.
