Are my rear springs faulty?

Post by MGFmad »

I was under the Traveller to repaint the floor pan and noticed that both my rear springs have gaps between the bottom 2 sring sections, at the ends where they meet the next bigger section above. The photo shows this better!

Does this mean they have had it, or is this normal aging?

Thanks for any comments and advice :)

Normal enough - although they do look pretty rusty! What's the gap between bump stop and chassis plate ?

That gap is normal if the weight is off the springs. With new springs, the gap between the top of the bump stop and chassis stop plate is 37mm. Another measurement is taken with springs unloaded. If you draw an imaginary line between the two eyelets of the spring, and measure from that line to the top of the cnetre of the main leaf (not to the top of the dowel bolt) it should be 115mm for new springs. Below 105mm and the springs should be replaced.

Yet another measurement, with car unladen and resting on it's wheels, 24 3/4 inches from floor to wheel arch lip. Tyres at 26 PSI

New springs made a huge difference to my car.

Mine looked pretty much like that for ages and the car drive OK. It was only when one finally cracked that I changed them. The way the car handled all the speed bumps now, well its like a different car.

If you the time and money I would recommend changing them. I found it a lot easier to do then I thought it would be. I guess you should check the spring hangers are in good shape first.
