crank removal

hello can any one tell me is it possible reshell the crank without actuallyremoving the crank , thanks ,,grandad

I've not long ago done just this job on my sidevalve. I am sure it could also be done on the ohv engines. Just keep it all spotlessly clean.

Well you can certainly do the big ends - and the centre main - and someone came up with a reason why the rear main couldn't be done although I though that would be possible - (I think the cap jams on the backplate) and the front main could be done - if you strip out the timing chain and release the two little bolts going through the front plate. Why do you think it needs re-shelling ? If the crank is worn - it's just money wasted. A full crank regrind with a NEW oil pump is the way forward if there is any discernible wear.

I thank you sir! - the Wolfrace wheels are hard to find now - one of the reasons I bought the car! The other was the roll-over bar behind the seats. And the main reason - when I go to classic shows - it's usually the ONLY TR7 there!

i had a TR7 many years ago . bought another recently but i dont think i will get it on the road so i have advertised it to sell it. taken center main off and it is showing wear, i am told that it is possible to change without removing the crank. unsure,Image

I've done big ends, mains and thrusts on Triumph OHV 4 and 6 pot lumps, but as bmc says, there's a reason you can't do the mains on the A series in situ. I also can't remember what it is though!

It's not a massive job to get the engine out of a Minor, so if you do feel it needs doing you may as well spend the extra hour or two taking the engine out. Makes doing the bottom end much nicer than laying underneath, with oil dripping in your eyes, very little light to see what you're doing, and worrying about getting crud from the floor into your fingers and then onto the shiny new bearings...

thank you did you di it in situe if so what was involved, ,,i am not realy that grumpy but i shouted at my granddaughter oneday and she called me grumpy grandad,so it stuck.

As I said -you can certainly do the centre -and the front if willing to take the timing gear off. It's just the rear that remains in doubt - but I believe it's not possible because the cap fouls on the engine backplate - it's the seal part that fouls !

Just to clarify; with advice from blokes on here, I changed all the bigend shells and the centre AND the front main bearing shells from under the car. The rear mains cap interfered with the big plate at the back of the engine and couldn't be removed, and the pump seemed unreachable. the most difficult job was undoing the bigend bolts 'cos the spilt is angled across at 45 dgrees and the bolt heads are shallow. But all together its wasn't too hard even for an arthritic old clown like me. I note, by the way, that the new bigend bolts from ESM that I fitted had full depth heads - I'm glad to say! No slippage!

hello thankyou all for your advice but now removed engine and on the bench partialy stripped will be renewing bearings, pump .timing gear and any other bits that come to light thankyou ALL, GRANDAD.
