My float has sunk

Hi,

The float in the carb of my 1958 948cc 2 door has got a split in it about 5mm long, parallel to the hole through the middle. I tried soldering it but the solder has cracked over the crack in the brass.

Has anyone managed to mend a brass float? How about 2 pack epoxy?

I am not sure which float to buy if I have to buy one, I have seen reference to H1, H2 and HSetc carbs, which carb would my car have? it has the original engine and air filter so I think it is the original carb.

The only good thing about this is geting the petrol out of the float by gently holding the float in the vice with the split downwards and lighting the petrol, after a few seconds its like a mini jet engine! Dont try this at home!

Dpn't use epoxy- it will be too heavy. Soldering should fix it- make sure the brass is clean- and use flux!

Ouch! Surely someone on here can supply a good secondhand one for a more reasonable price than that.

Thanks for your responses, I have biten the bullet and bought one, the nice man at ESM said my car should have an H2 carb, I will know for sure when it arrives tomorrow and it fits!

I needed one in a hurry, MOT is friday, after 4 years of work. Watching petrol pour over a hot exhaust manifold is not fun.

Thanks, I have re-repaired the old one to use as a spare, this time using solder with lead in it, it survived about 5 miles driving without splitting, the original repair with lead free solder lasted about a mile!

I think lead free solder is less ductile when it sets, the lead free repair solder split over the split in the brass.
