Rearmost Exhaust Bracket

Post by wiglaf »

I picked up a metallic rattle on Sunday, and realised today that it was coming from the exhaust - the rear bracket that connects the strap to the ubolt clamp has broken, and given its corroded state I'm going to replace that whole assembly - I doubt I'll be able to loosen the clamp from the exhaust or remove the bracket from the strap in a usable state: they are in a *rough* way.

Obviously, I'll be checking the rest of the exhaust hanging bits too :)

Is there anything else it would be worth doing/checking/thinking about at the same time?

As ever, thanks for your thoughts!

While you are under the car, do a visual search of everthing.

Just amused at the use of "visual". How else?

If one strap has rotted - the other is likely to be in the same state - renew them both!

Um... I could try an inhalation inspection - breathe in *really* hard, and if you suck in rust there's a bad patch?

Good old 'contents' test.
If you can see the contents of your boot - its a bad sign.

Be brutal with a screwdriver in all the corners and the chassis rails where the suspension attaches.
Be prepared to cry when the screwdriver goes right through and ends up inside a piece of box section.
What would Macgyver do..?

I'm sure it was to be a 'visual' inspection as opposed to the more rigorous 'spanner check' inspection where each and every nut/bolt under the car is checked for tightness. Standard procedure on any Competition Car before an event. Not a bad idea on any Morry - before any long journey.
