"lol"

Post by olonas »

As a speaker, reader and writer of the English language for a number of years I have never come across the word "lol." Will someone please enlighten me! :-?

Hi Olanas I also posted this under the Meet Blossom posting

Jane being one of the old`s I have noticed that on a lot of recent post`s including your own use the term `LOL` it is being used quite often what does this stand for
Lots of Love
Lots of Luck
Lack of Luck
Last of the Loonies
Left on the Laybye
I know this will seem silly to those in the know but please be gentle as the cobwebs cloud my vision
Cheers

I haven't seen it in context, but I take it to mean 'laugh Out Loud'.

Hi,

As long as it's TLA compliant it's okay, IMHO

BTW - Always RTFM before carrying out any maintenance.

Ya LOL = Laughing Out Loud

And if it really gets funny its ROFLOL (Rolling On Floor Laughing Out Loud.

Go wander into some chat room or use one of the messenger services you'll find ppl LOLing heaps.

Its often used to indicate a joke, or as a way to respond to a funny comment when you don't know what else to say.

R.I.P. the English language
LMAO - Should English remains safe in its Ivory towers... or do languages die if they don't move with the times? ;-)
For all those ppl who struggle - there are various SMS dictionaries, and most textspeak is multi purpose as chatroom speak .

It seems to me that English is one of the constantly changing ones. Chinese for example has been virually unchanged for thousands of years. English however only seems to take a couple of decades before the older generation is totally confused by the modern terms.

I must admit that I seem to be in the 'older' lot more so than the 'modern' lot, although speaking to Jane (with a 10 year old son and a 7 year old daughter) and my sister who is 14 does REALLY help with understanding the modern garb.

One of my mates has about 2 sides of A4 full of these things... maybe I should get a copy so they can print it up in Minor Matters!
Mind you not all of them are that polite!

Thanks, Dizzi. As one of the "older" ones, I have difficulty some times with the new lingo. I suppose not having a mobile phone puts me at an even greater disadvantage.
Any chance of just sticking to English (even though some of the spelling is atrocious)?

PS
Is there one of these for stop putty/spot putty or am I just waffling again?

ANd theres more that I thought of
BTW by the way
LTNC long time no see
OMG oh my god
IM instant message
OTO or O2O one to one/private chat
PM private message
etc etc
You get the general idea. It gets to the point that when someone uses an abbreviaiton you can guess what it is without actually knowing. But when your talking to someone who doesn't know or is a newbie its nettique to either talk in full or to explain. You do get used to it.
