my day has smelt of grease from beginning to end

cleaned out (/excavated) vintage grease gun bought at an autojumble for 0p.

Completely disassembled it and reassembled it, and loaded it with fresh grease.

Go gun go!!! Have now greased my trunnions, stub axle thingy, steering rack and prop shaft. I feel like Alannis Morrisette

Never ventured into the black art of grease nipple manipulation before, couldn't believe it would work, it does work!!! joy joy joy

Thanks are due to Nicky for making me buy the gun despite it looking like archaeology, to Griff for melting the worst poo of old solid brown grease out of it, and to Jamie for wrestling with the loading gear to get it refilled and ready to rock and roll!!!

steering rack should be done with EP90 as per manual and not grease

Grease is better in the rack! You forgot the handbrake cables, and the track rod ends - grease them too.

au - steering rack - grease goes in the grease nipple, and hypoid in the gaiters, apparently. All I have to do now is find out where i can put the hypoid in, given that someone has replaced the clips on either end of each gaiter with cable ties

bmce - no i didn't forget the track rod ends, just didn't mention them in the list. And i ain't gonna grease the handbrake cables till they are installed in the van

No, that's wrong. You put hypoid in the nipple (as it says in the manual). Leave the gaiters well alone unless they have split. Grease won't do the rack any harm though so don't worry about it.

I unbolt the nipple on the steering rack and where it says in the manual 20 pumps of oil from oil in a grease gun, I give 20 squirts of EP 90 (giving each time to drain into the rack) from an oil can, and turn the steering wheel (both front wheels off the ground) to aid distribution of the oil.

ChickenJohn it isn't clear to me how one gains access to unbolt the nipple - is that the one under the passenger footboard?

Yes, it is, remove the plug in the footboard and use a socket to undo the nipple, be careful to to drop the nipple as you withdraw the socket, put some grease or blutack in the socket before you undo to grip the nipple after its undone.

I lost a steering rack nipple this way.

The exact same design of rack is used in the Mini - it's just slightly shorter - and has always been specified with grease. It doesn't run out - and it dampens any rattles from the rack. If you have put grese in the rack - leave it there!!

ive greased mine i wonder why they specify ep 90 all the rack is cog teeth and shorly the grease will hang around longer.i love grease got loads of nipples on my david brown tractor.
