National Rally badge design

Post by alex_holden »

Image

Here is the badge design I have come up with for the National Rally. It will be printed out at 80mm by 48mm and laminated. I will probably hole-punch the top corners and tie a ribbon to it so you can hang it round your neck. Obviously the names part will look a bit less daft if the two aren't almost identical like mine. It's not too difficult to tweak the text for individual badges - eg. if you are shy about advertising your real name I can miss that line off.

Any suggestions for improvements? I will post a separate topic asking who wants a badge once I have finalised the design.

Lovely picture 8)

I never like offering criticism when someone has done a good job, but two thoughts:

(a) If we want to advertise the site, then script is not the clearest font;
(b) Although I accept that it could be used in the future; as it's a special occasion, why not include the 60th details?

Seeing the bonnet up, hope it wasn't anything serious, and that you got going again fairly soon

I've chopped the corners to leave a bit more room for the ribbon holes and played around a bit with the text colours to make it more readable when printed out. Since nobody has pointed out any glaring problems this is probably the version I will go with.

BTW this photo was taking at Land's End just before the start of LEO 2007. It was the beginning of a very hot sunny cloudless day and I had opened the bonnet so I could put my deckchair in front of the car and use it as a sunshade.

Gorgeous pic, alex - just shame it's not one of God's own vehicles (a van  )

I agree with simmitc that, if it's not too late, making the website addy clearer would be a major bonus 8) Not quite sure about saying "the website lot" (yes, i know it was me that suggested it, but that was kind of a joshing type of thingy  )

The main purpose of the badge is to identify the person wearing it - advertising the site is secondary, however here is a version that emphasises the address more:

(b) Although I accept that it could be used in the future; as it's a special occasion, why not include the 60th details?
Lack of space, distracts from the primary purpose (identification) and secondary purpose (advertising) of the badge, tells people something they probably already know if they are at the 60th anniversary rally, potentially confusing (the website is 60 years old?), and as you say I hope people will reuse the same badges next year so I don't have to manufacture a new lot that don't have "60th Anniversary" on them.

I actually think it's a good idea as it shows we don't take ourselves too seriously.

Personally I think it sounds fun and self-deprecating rather than cliquey. Does anyone else prefer something more neutral like "Forum Member"?

Perhaps the inclusion of an arrow pointing at the wearers face and the words 'join here' to encourage the viewer to communicate (and therefore participate) rather than mutter and move on. :D

I agree with wibble 'website lot' seems like an after thought rather than a major force in the MMOC! We also want to attract the 'silver surfer' as well as the younger owners and I suspect the ss would like the term 'website lot'

Nevertheless Alex very good design and I will go with the majority opinion.

Will there be a laptop on the stand for the non-users to be shown how to access the site?

I'd rather not see website lot, simply because I found it offensive when it was uttered at the AGM, and I feel it to be a bit demeaning to accept this term.
I'd tend to emphasise the forum member text and minimize the web address.
Good effort and imagination for the concept though Alex :D

Although I have personally chosen not to attend the National, if I were too, I would certainly be happy to wear a badge such as the one produced by Alex, just as I did the Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow (Induction, Compression, Ignition, Exhaust  ) T shirt produced by BG last year, when I was still a member of the National Committee.

However I must agree with Jonathon about the term 'the Website Lot', it reminds me of someone I heard once refering to concours entrants as 'the elite', both in my opinion unacceptable.

Having said this, whatever title is finally given, the badge will highlight the fact that there is a good number of dedicated website users, and should provide an exellent oportunity to 'plug' the site.
