Wiper boxes.

Post by polo2k »

Hi all I have a 63 4 Door that is a single screen but has factory fitted "praying hands" wipers.
I have them fitted at the moment, on the drivers side I got about a 90 degree sweep, on the passenger side I have a 45degree sweep.
I noticed that the wheelboxes behind the dash have slightly different fixings.
Presuming that I had fitted a late wheelbox with a smaller "gear inside" I ordered another early one, It arrived, and at £39+vat its going back!

Is there any way to convert the late unit I already have to one that operates identically to the early one?

Are you sure it's not just wear that's restricting the movement ? If you 'help' it by hand - does it sweep further ? If so - mark it carefully - then take it to bits, rotate the gear by 180 degrees - and re-assemble. The unworn gear teeth may make all the difference. Could also be wear on the little splined post that the wiper arm connects to - in which case another box is likely to be the answer, assuming the wear is not just on the arm ?

I have the same problem with mine, on mine it is because it has had new wipers fitted which are slightly longer and therefore would collide with each other therefore the motor has been restricted, don't know if this could be the same problem as yours

hows that done because id rather use 2 of the later (and presumably cheeper) ones with a longer motor throw.

Check that the cable outer casing is clamped tight on either side of the wheel boxes. Loose cables will affect the amount of travel of the wipers. I think that if you rotate the gearbox farthest from the wiper motor you will alter the direction of travel of the wipers. But I could be wrong on that one.

I had the outer loose on one box but tightening it has made little difference overall.
I think I might leav e her as is for the moment, as there is a sweep, and then keep an eye open at autojumbles.

Does anyone know at what year the "praying hands" wiper movements turned into the more modern "mexican wave" ?
