my cars been in for some work and it wae sound that the timming was out.it is now running on when you switch it off.my dizy is not the standard one it is a d45 i believe and does not have the knerled nut on it,thankd dale.

Thre ws a thread about this recently and the rusult was badly fitted fuses.
other than that how is the engine running? could it be over advanced ignition?

I've struggled with this in the past. Check timing and mixture, give the car a good blast to clear it out, maybe use some redex as well. If it still persists it's probably down to carbon deposits. There are several magic cures such as connecting a cup of water to the distributor end of the advance tube to the carburettor. I found mine was only solved by a de-coke with the head off.

The first question with running on is, is the tickover too fast?. If your timing has been adjusted as you say then the tickover speed may now be the culprit.

So - this has only happened since they 'found the timing was out' - and presumably they changed the timing ? If so - put it back where it was - running on is indicative of retarded ignition timing. I'm guessing there was nothing wrong with it in the first place.
