best gear for miles per gallon

Post by pbuller »

Given today's gas/petrol prices, what gear delivers the best miles per gallon for a 1969 Morris Traveler? I read somewhere that it was third gear. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, if there are any other Morris owners in Orkney, it would be good to hear from you. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure fourth will be better as long as you're going fast enough that the engine isn't labouring badly.

Kevin from Harray is called Orkney on here but he mostly hangs out on the other forum: http://www.morrisowners.co.uk/

A group of us will be driving up to Orkney from Land's End at the beginning of August to attend the vintage club show (we did it last year too). http://mog.myfreeforum.org/about8.html

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

highest gear will give you best mpg. Wind resistance is a square of the speed so as you get fast the mpg will reduce.
As for hills - they are best avoided ;-) or just go up them gently.

No point labouring the car in top gear if it can't accelerate - use the most appropriate gear to suit the conditions - with minimal throttle opening.
