turbo a ital lump

hi, got a few q's on turboing my ital lump

i was lead to believe that the A+ ital lump was the only lump that could be turboed using metro parts, can someone tell me is metro pistons and rods are a straight swap and is there any weakness in the ital lump ie the crank to the metro.

could i have simply have turboed a normal midget lump or marina using a+ pistons?

i am thinking of using the ital rear end on the minor, is this strong enough? will it be able to take the power.

what carb would the ital have, im getting conflicting info that its a HIF44. on a turbo application do i have to use a metro carb or and carb off the HIF range

it seems like the ital has a HIF44 carb which is good, prob needs diffrent needle for turbo setup

any ideas on the rest

There is a specific hif44 turbo carb. If you use a normally aspirated one fuel will go everywhere!

The ital rear end is much stronger than the minor one. The same axle is used in the 1300s (67bhp) through to the 1.8TC (around 100hp) and the ital is a heavier car. The only difference was the diff ratio. Wheels can be awkward though

turbo a or a+ is ok.

metro turbo carb is specific to turbo and would need to be used cos it is sealed.

cast pistons (ie standard ones) are only good for 5 to 6 psi. (I speak from bitter experience)

over 6 psi you will need forged pistons (big money)

metro turbo head will go on ital engine and has sodium filled valves, but not essential.

met turbo rods and pistons will go in ital engine. personally would fit new pistons aimed at the van with the lower compression ratio, thats what I did.

yes you can turbo a standard ital lump but you would need the turbo carb, low boost 3 to 4 psi and drive it with respect, ie save your fun for short blasts followed by being nice to it for a few minutes, then have another daft session. Driving full tilt for 20 minutes non stop is hard work for an old forced engine, driving hard for 2 to 3 minutes then being kinder isn't anywhere near as hard on the engine. I hope you get my point that repeated small fun is better than blowing up regularly.

thanks for both replies

ill think ill use the ital setup for rear diff etc., i didnt know it was same as 1.8 ones..

superchargedfool, you say standard cast pistons are only good for 5-6psi, is this because of detonation, whats the standard compression ration of a metro turbo compared to a normal A+ n/A, the car will definatly have a intercooler so will reduce chances of detonation.

im prob going to go for a +20 rebore with new pistons anyway, are metro turbo rods beefier than the standard n/a A+?

Metro rods are just the same as Ital. However - critically the Metro turbo had a hardened crank - with the 'full face' half main-bearing shells to take the extra load. If you want decent life you should get the crank tuftrided - and modify the block to take the Metro shells. You must use a Metro turbo carb - and water injection may help reduce detonation. You really should use the Metro head - with sodium exhausts - they did that for a v good reason!
