Ford type 9 5-speed gearbox oil

Post by WPR678B »

I need to change the oil in my 5 speed Sierra gearbox in my Minor, and need to know the definative answer as to which oil to put in! :-?
I paid a visit to my local large chain of motor factors (won't mention any names!) today and was told that i needed EP80W90. I KNOW for a fact that this is wrong as when i first fitted the gearbox 15 odd years ago i filled it with this and couldn't change gear! I then went to my local independant who supplied me the correct stuff, but sadly he has now gone out of business
So, what is the correct stuff to fill it with?
There is no drain plug on this type of gearbox, so i don't want to get it wrong again!

Many now use 'MTF' - Manual Transmission Fluid - which as far as I can find out is just 10W40 engine oil - without some of the special engine additives! My TR7 was specified with EP80 - but all the advice on Triumph forum is to use ATF or MTF - and since the Minor box survives well on engine oil - that's exactly what I intend to use in the TR7. As you say - EP80/90 makes for very tight gearchange when the oil is cold. Can you not join a Ford forum - and ask on there ? Would be good to get their opinion.

Ive just bought a couple of litres of oil for my type 9 gearbox in readyness to fit a 5 speed conversion, I pulled the old engine and box yesterday, modified the transmmision tunnel and fittted a shortened handbrake lever: Standard oil grade 75W90 semi-synthetic.
Hope it stops raining today

Well - 75W90 is pretty much the same as EP80/90 - so say hello to stiff gear changing! Seriously - ask on a Ford forum.

Just an update for BMC " so say hello to stiff gear changing"
Filled the gearbox today and took the old mog for a drive, gear changes were very slick with no stiffness at all, more than can be said for the Midget clutch that takes twice the effort at the pedal than the minor, hope it get easier when everthing is bedded in.

For what it's worth, at work we use Castrol FMT oil in all our Ford gearboxes.

Cheers

Ok - so what is 'FMT'? Sounds like the 'Manual Transmission' oil I suggested a while back!
