Traveller rear bumper irons - need to straighten bend

Post by Mike Shipman »

Hi - My traveller had a knock at some point in the past and the rhs rear bumper is consequently pushed right up against the bodywork. Would it be possible to straighten the iron out with a heavy hammer or does it need some heat to bend it back where it ought to be?
Your comments would be appreciated.
Regards, Mike.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Large Hammers?

Now we are talking my language.
If you require the help of a fellow 'Impact Technician' Mike just ask. :)

But do it off the car - not in place - just in case you damage the moutings.

Yes, you'll need a big securely mounted vice to hold it while you belt on it. Getting it somewhere close to right is easy; the tricky part is getting it to not look wonky after you've put it back on the car.

It's quite springy - a bit of heat may well be necessary. I did this many years ago - but can't remember if I heated it. When done - be sure to apply chassis black!

Mike. You are welcome to the Bumper Iron I've just taken off the trav which is a bit bended after my father decided to crash the lawn mower into it but is serviceable and it'll give you something to practice on.

I can have a go at straightening it myself if you want (big chunks of steel and big hammers come to mind...)
