petrol pump

Any bad points found with these electronic fuel pumps, wondering whether to buy one or buy the normal type?

Theres nothing wrong with the normal SU, don't fix what ain't broke.

I've heard the electronic ones aren't quite so reliable and if they do fail, smacking them with a spanner won't do much good

Exactly!

The old SU pumps last for years and years - just clean the points from time to time.

if the new one you're thinking of is a 'Hardi' then I would not recommend it

yeh I put one on an mgb and it only lasted three years before packing up then back to the su and its still going strong after 15 years.

Ok, thanks for the replies, I'm rebuilding two standard ones at the moment, but wondered about changing plans, perhaps not then.

Get then both working and tested then fit one and carry the other as spare. As long as you have a known good spare - the one on the car will work perfectly.

Hah! How true. A corollary of Murphy's law? Along with, "The likelihood of a flat tire is directly related to the expense of whatever you're wearing"?

It's a near certainty if you don't have a spare tyre with you!
