GEARBOX!!!!

Post by NicholasGoater »

Hi, I have a Morris Minor Saloon and I'm having problems with it's gearbox. It started off not being able to go into fourth gear, then the problem progressed so it can only go in first and second gear now. It just won't go into third and fourth. Any ideas what might be causing it? It's making me CRAZY!

gearbox

2nd and 3rd gears are on the same shaft, if a locking ring has broken on that shaft they are free to move around. That would be your worst case scenario, but it could be as simple as the selector mechanism.

if you have changed the gearbox oil recently its worth noting that it should be 20/50w engine oil :)

Could be serious problems internally -but just possible it's the plastic bush at the base of the lever, or as above - the selector for 3/4 may have come loose on it's shaft. Does the lever seem very 'sloppy' in ALL gear positions, or only in the 3/4 plane ? Is the box noisy when driving in the two gears you still have ?

could be a long list of things from knackered selectors to knackered baulk rings, gears etc etc etc
any bits in the oil?

Cheers

You haven't said if the gear lever is loose and wobbling about - in all planes or just in 3/4 part of the gate ?

Well done the mechanic - had it just worked loose on the shaft - or worn out?
