Rustoleum Paint.

I find it hard to believe that no one on this forum has painted their car in Rustoleum Enamel. It has been raved about on VW and Mini forums for about 2 years now. Surely someone must have painted a Minor with it?

I've never seen it for sale anywhere near here though. Besides, Cellulose is much easier to get a good finish with.

If cheap enough, it might be good for under body painting.

Yes, there is a chap in the states who hand painted his car with thinned rustoleum then wet sanded it smooth and repeated a few times and got a great finish.

I'll see if I can find the link, however, it all sounds like a lot of hard work compared to using cellulose (which is available for pre '72 cars BTW, and there may be no need for licenses etc).

Its not like you can walk into your local shop and buy a tin of rustoleum.
(Unless you live in the states).

That $50 paint job is all very well (theres a dodge charge too thats been done) but just think of the sheer amount of work thats had to go into wet sanding it between coats.

Fair eough if you can afford to take your car off the road for a week - and bus it to work.

Can you walk into your local shop and buy any part for your Minor, or do you have to send off for it?
Why take your car offroad for a week? I haven't.

You can buy paint from Avenue Paints in Slough. You just have to pay for postage.

Why take your car offroad for a week? I haven't.

Am I to assume you drive it daily and work on the paint in the evenings?
I guess thats do-able given the current glorious weather and light nights we're having.
Although I'd personally have to win over the wife to the idea of bringing my tea out to me.

I've yet to see a decent comparison of this paint against its UK equivalents - ie.. 'RePaint', International 'Japlac' and other DIY enamels.
(obv not Hammertite Smooth as we know thats rubbish)

Also, if you're going to have to buy it mail order you might as well buy proper tecaloid coach paint. Same hassle - better product.

Apparently the Tekaloid paints cannot be polished flat like with Rusoleum, to get a smoother final finish.

If anyone is interested I have an RAL colour card for the Rustoleum range, I'll be going round the national comparing it to Minor colours for future reference.

I'd be interested to see the results of this research. There is a place that'll mix any colour if you've got a code, and there is a charge for this, but if any of the RAL colours are 99% there, you could save a bit of cash.

I'll post a list on here after the national with my results. I've also found a main supplier of Rustoleum products up the road in Wolverhampton. I feel a Combi-Coat paint job on my 66 custom coming up after the 3 million hours welding it needs

I thought Rustoleum was an oil-based enamel, which would lose its gloss quickly...

No, Tekaloid is oil based, but Rustoleum is resin based, apparently.

We're about to start repainting our LCV with Rustoleum Combi-Colour, the previous owner had brush-painted the van with domestic gloss (LOTS of streaks, runs and brushmarks.....possibly the paint was applied with a broom?) Having read all the available threads online, the fish-oil based Rustoleum finish sounds to have lots going for it, plus people have found it sprays easily (using white spirit as thinners) if they can't be bothered with the roller-and-rub-down method. It's got to be cheaper than cellulose - I look forwards to finding out whether all the online hype is justified........

Hammerite Smooth

Did someone say it is rubbish, afraid I cannot agree, painted the wheels on our Mk 1 Mini about 15 years ago in the equivalent to Old English White and it still looks good.
Also use black Hammerite Smooth on both my Minor and Rover p4 with good long lasting results. The only problem is it is hard to find in the shops?

Black gloss Smoothrite is easy to find. The satin stuff is a bit scarcer. Unfortunately Magnolia (the nearest Smoothrite colour to OEW) doesn't seem to be available any more.
