What is the switch for under the speedo (1968 Minor)

Post by MGFmad »

I don't have a handbook for the car and cannot find out what this switch does, its mounted under the speedo panel as per the arrow on the photo - a black switch that slides from side to side.

Also, there is an amber warning light in the speedo, above the blue main beam one - it doesn't come on but I wondered what it does.

Thanks

In the later cars the light does nothing whatsover, can't remember what it is in the earlier cars.

I'm guessing you mean the little slide switch that is conveniently out of sight? It turns the speedo lights on and off.

no need to shout! Anyway in a 68 it won't do anything, if you take the speedo out you will find no bulb plugged in and probabally a small rubber boot over the hole.

Thanks for that - I didn't try the switch at night so wouldn't have noticed the speedo lights.

I guess the 'extra' warning light could be used if some extra piece of equipment was wired into the car and you needed a light.

Ive heard about this oil filter switch... from what i hear its an over pressure swith to detact a blocked filter... How does it do this, obviously with a sensor but where is the sensor? oil filter housing?

Hi MGFmad - don't worry, you are by no means the first person to have been foxed by that little switch!

Indeed it could :D only thing is, if you sell the car, make sure the new owner knows what the light refers to :o 8)

It used to be a common trick to wire the fuel pump through the panel light switch as an anti theft measure. This was fine until the switch burned out.
