NEW STRIPDUSTER WEBSITE

Post by Harry'sGirl »

Hi Everyone, My name is Jane, I am the daughter of Harold Bull who built and raced Stripduster with a Morris Minor engine, which did a standing quarter mile in 9 seconds in the '60's & '70's. I have uploaded the first draft of the website, there is still alot on information to put on....but I thought you Guys may be interested to see just what your engines can achieve......We are trying to find where the car is now and bring her back to England to restore her to original build. Wish us luck !!! Hope you enjoy the site

I remember seeing this race as Santa Pod in the early 70's - I was interested because of the Morris Minor parts being used! Sadly no photos as I didn't own a camera in those days.

Interesting that the engine doesn't seem to have any cooling - presumably it didn't run long enough to overheat and seize.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Because the car was run on alcohol (methanol) the engine runs alot cooler and as you say doesn't run for long enough to overheat, and no he didn't try the side valve engine :D

Picture this, spotty kid from darkest lancashire, to far from Santa pod to get there, then along comes Custom Car magazine, with cars like your dads Strip Duster, Inch pincher, commutor, dragandfly. Drivers like Dennis Priddle, Clive Skilliter and my favourite Al Oconnor in Als Gasser pulled behind a pilot called Als hauler. Made me want to be a hot rodder and your dad using a minor engine gave me hope! I did grow up to build hot rods but there was something special about that time before big money got into the sport.
I remember seeing a photo of your dad going up against the kart engined dragster, where the start marshall is doing a 'ministry of silly walks betwen the cars (which appears on your website) seem to remember that by some loophole the kart had an unfair advantage in bracket racing, but it was a long time ago I may be doing him a diservice. I do hope you find Strip Duster and bring her home it would be great to hear her run after all these years of imagining it!
I'll see you on the otherside'!

Als Gasser pulled behind a pilot called Als hauler.
Names from the past. Fond memories.
Do you remember the wheelie pick-up and the wheelie Vette. Saw them at the pod about 2 years ago

Remember them well mate! the stingray had a lizard down the side. Stuck up here in Lancashire the first real dragraces I went to where run by Pennine drags over at Burtonwood air base, when the yanks were still there you had to change your money into dollars at the gate!
Went to all the Custom Car shows at belle vue as well and saw loads of what are now called classic rods. Like Puddle jumper, Pinball Wizard, and Moulin rouge. To anybody who was around at the time these where dream cars, I remeber being slightly disapointed the first time I saw one close up and it was a bit rougher than I expected, and now I run a 'Rat rod' van that I,m very proud of, how times (and fashions change).
I'll see you on the otherside'!
