Speedo drive cable question

Post by Judge »

When modifying my convertible, it was necessary to have the speedo recalibrated and to fit a Ford/Morris drive cable. Having had a number of these fail and apparently cause damage to the speedo, I was wondering if anyone else had had similar problems?

How did it 'damage' the speedo ? If the cable fails it presumably just snaps - and disconnects the drive to the speedo. Or - did it allow oil to travel up into the speedo works ?

Was the speedo actually modified to accept a ford cable :o You normally get a hydrid cable made...

What does the speedo end of the ford cable look like?

I am lead to believe that the depth of the keyway in the speedo head is 0.5" and that the end of the cable to the brass ferrule should be no more than say 12mm. Mine measured around 0.75" and therefore put pressure on the speedo head and caused it to be damaged.

Probably Kevin, but if everyone keeps 'making do', the manufacturer is not made aware that there is a problem, so can't put it right.

Could this be why there are so many complaints about modern parts?

That reminds me. has there been a further meeting yet?
