Help with Coursework! Post War Cars.

Post by AndrewSkinner »

Looking for a bit of help with my Uni Course work!

I am writting about the inovation and drive behind the development of cars. I have started by talking about the very first cars ever produced and how they have had an effect on the design of cars.

I am to the point where I need to talk about Post War Cars and how the new smooth sleek designs completely turned the car industry on its head.

so heres the Q! What would you say was the most revolutionanry Post War car in terms of engineering and Looks? e.g. the first car to come with some new technology or the very first car to have the wheels wrapped under the wings of the car in one moulded piece?

Cheers guys!

I think the first monocoque car (for volume production) was the Citroen Traction Avant - also the first volume production car with front-wheel drive.

If you want sleek designs, look to the cars of the 40's in the US. Issigonis spent some time in the USA and was influenced by the style of the American cars.

Also, concept cars from the 20's and 30's are quite insightful. Often totally barmy, but a few are quite indicative of things to come.
Happy Minoring!

Personally I think the mini is the most revolutionary post war car... yes there were front wheel drives before, but the mini is the car that all the modern euroboxes are based on!

The Morris 10 was a 'revolutionary' car in the UK - first with monocoque type body - although with elements of built-in chassis !! Issigonis was involved in that car - front suspension I think ? Citroen 2CV was really a pre-war car, but only made in quantity post war - with mechanically linked front-rear suspension and of course FWD.
And of course in the UK (after the Mini) - Triumph Herald and Morris 1100 were also class leaders with 4 wheel independent suspension with RWD for the Triumph - and linked Hydrolastic FWD in the case of the Morris.
