Gearknobs

I am trying to find out whether there is any demand for the manufacture of a batch of gearknobs for the Series MM. If you are interested please make your comments on this website. The more comments, the more chance of the project going ahead.

What did they look like, I'm not sure if i've got one or not already. I have a slender one that looks sixties and the same as the one in an 1100 i used to have. I also have a big round one with no patern on it made of whit plastic.

As far as I remember they were quite large diameter and made of rubber? I made a replacement when mine decomposed so I think I will stick with what I have thanks.

The gearknob that came with out SII (1956) was a bakelite kind of material, slightly ball shaped but brown. As the car was in original state having been drystored for 18 years since the original owner died we assumed that this was the original - like Judges link - but brown. Should it have been white or was that only for the very early models?

Yes please. I well remember the knob on my '49 that I replaced with a solid brass one - just because ...

My recently acquired '50 MM has the wrong knob on it and I don't like it. I will be looking for one but a new replica would be good too.

I gave Jonathon of JLH an old gearknob at the Nat Rally and he was going to look into the feasability of copying it in an improved material so that it didn't flop about like the original. He was also going to look into the possibility of producing wheel bolts with a larger head to stop the problem of wheel wobble. I emailed him a couple of days ago and I am waiting for a reply. I guess he may be on holiday.
Please note that Jonathon and I are commiting a considerable financial outlay on the reproduction of obsolete parts and we have to recoup that outlay before we can invest in further parts necessary to keep your Series MMs on the road.
I would also say that John Vine of Minor Developments has also risked the expense of tooling up for Series MM engine parts and many people have been able to fit new alloy castings to their engines.

Mike, we are still investigating suitable materials for the gearknob. As you say we need to recoup some of the outlay on the waterpump pulleys before we can invest in the gearknobs and studs.
Limited runs can only be successfull if those showing an interest actually buy, otherwise the funding runs short for further projects.I can assure you that the profit margins are kept to a minimum , just to keep the production costs to a reasonable amount.

Is there any way of giving a rough idea of cost please?

Yours is the 2nd enquiry from down under today. There seems to be a reasonable demand if all those who have expressed an interest commit themselves. Once we can come up with a unit cost we will know whether the product is viable.
We could do with selling a few more sump plugs and water pump pulleys to help the cash flow. The more we can sell then the more money there is to invest in other products.
