Painting the slats in a wooden luggage rack

Post by ron77 »

I'm thinking of ordering a luggage rack for my 1000 convertible, but don't like the very light color of the wood on the one I'm looking at. (Charles Ware supplied, and fairly standard). Does anyone know if the slats can be removed and re-stained to a mahogany. Any ideas as to how hard it is, and suggestions of best varnish, etc?
I'm in London; car in Massachusetts (summer use only!)

Can you not get one back home as timber seems to be much cheaper and more readily available in the US, also it may be better to get your timber finish back home as it should be more suitable for the local climate.
