Why does my new vehicle registration document state the taxation class as 'not licensed'? Shouldn't it say 'Historic vehicle'?

My new log book said that when it was first re registered after being of the road for 20 years or so. You will need to get the vehicle registerd as historic at your local vehicle registration er....place. Mine was in bristol and was done over the counter. They informed me that you cant get the vehicle taxed with a 'not registered' tax disc. Although, i got a tax disc saying'not registered' on it but this was apparently, in error.

the local DVLA office I went to were really helpful- changed colour engine number and taxation class all at the same time and gave me a tax disc for nothing!!

I know there is a local office at the end of the M275 Pete.... I dont think there is one in Soton

The local DVLA office is where I went to get the car re-registered 6 months ago. When the form was filled out the girl at the desk wrote historic vehicle down. Is this some kind of DVLA administrative twist because it's not very funny.

You can only change the taxation category of a vechicle when you actually tax it... you wern't able to tax it 6 months ago so they wern't able to change the category.

Presumably its gone to "non liscenced" because you tried to change the category when you wernt actually able to....

But surely the tax catagory is based on the information supplied by the DVLA? The post office isn't qualified enough to make the decision for them. What happens when I go into the post office now then? Do I pay the flat rate up front then get it reimbursed as and when I can find someone knowlegeable enough to agree the car is tax exempt?
Am I actually going to gain any if I go to the local office again?

With all the provenance I gave them the first time what can I do this time to ensure I don't have a wasted trip?

They say that they cannot change the taxation class until you actually tax it! Over the counter at the DVLA local office is the only way i'm afraid mate!

Yup, you can't change the classification until you tax the vehichle and you have to do it at a DVLA office. It'll be a trip to Portsmouth for me soon with the trav.

I've got a free "not licensed" tax disc from the post office twice now! Still haven't got around to taking it to the nearest DVLA office...

That is just classic.
Sadly, it's not a valid tax disk as it does not comply with a valid category - but it's the programmers (and post office) that are likely to get in trouble more than you.

The DVLA refuse to change the tax category until after you have insurance and an MOT. This is just pointless as they are the ones who set the categories, but maybe it helps to justify having 'local' offices - many of which have already been closed

(there isn't any office local to Warwickshire since the Coventry one was closed)
