Well I think its probably down to lack of Trunnion greasing.

just a quick q. You know the top and bottom link that screws onto the Swivel Pin. When reasembling them how far should you screw on the links? Do you fully screw them in and then one turn back?

Its a good idea to grease the front suspension everytime you have the front wheels off. I grease the traveller at least 4 times a year, often more. (thats ~ every 1000-1200 miles).

Judging by the 'down in one front corner' attitude of of that car, I don't think it's a broken half shaft - or a "snapped axle"

If it was anything to do with the torsion bar - it would just settle on the bump stop and still be driveable. The trunnion drops out - easy repair - just jack it up and stick it back in! I did this when it happened to me (40+ years ago) - drove on to Uni in Glasgow - sat exam, and then drove home again! In this case - simple trolley jack under the car and pull it to the side of the road would have cleared the way in no time at all.

A halfshaft could have snapped, whirled around sending a bit through the axle casing, which flung it forward taking out the front corner.

Simple.

Wrong colour and model for you Dale.
I think it tends to happen at low speeds as the forces and torques involved are greater putting more strain on worn parts, and trunnions often give a tell tale small knocking sound before they finally go, we used to have the same issues years ago with Comma Vans.
