Oil Filter Light

Post by rio678 »

Hi everyone

My oil filter blocked light is staying on, today i changed the filter etc all looked to be okay but the light is still on. I do also have an on going tappet problem which sometimes one is noisy, not sure if it could be blocked elsewhere? any common problems with these filter pipes etc? It's the standard paper type element.

Very rare. Do you have an oil pressure gauge fitted to the car? If yes check that the oil pressure is about 40PSI at idle, 60PSI when running above 20MPH. If no oil pressure gauge in car, hook one up into the hole where the oil pressure warning switch is located, and take the same readings as above. It might just be the switch on the oil filter bowl is faulty.

If your unlucky it could be a sludge blockage in one of the engine oil ways, or severe sludge in the sump pan partly blocking the oil pump pickup pipe. I'd suspect the latter.

I'd pull the wire off the sender first to make sure it's not the wiring, then I'd fit a new switch, to make sure it's not the switch, then I'd do the other stuff that MT says :D IME it's usually the switch

As long as you are SURE it's the 'filter blocked' light that is on - and not the 'low oil pressure warning' light!! Does it stay off when engine not running - and come on only when you start the engine ?

Ok - well it must be faulty switch. I find the original filter easier to change than the spin -on, seems like a waste of money to me! Just leave the wire off - you will lose it anyway if you go to spin-on filter.

Filter warning light abright idea!

Post by tufty »

I piggybacked the two wires together I know that the oil filter light is telling porky pies but you do get two orange lights on the speedo on start up and if the oil pressure runs low pressure for any reason two lights come on. A bright idea me thinks! :D

Better with a gauge! When the low oil pressure light comes on - it's too late!
