OT Willys jeep problem

A friend of a friend is restoring a Willys jeep and has hit a snag.
Two of the head bolts (which are threaded into the water jacket) had rusted solid and have stripped the thread from the block as they were undone.

It has been suggested that if they are simply heli-coiled that water will find its way past and cause problems at a later date.

Any one got any thoughts on the best way to sort this out?

Sounds like drill the block & tap oversize, if the head will take an oversize bolt - may have to drill clearance in the head too. Otherwise, may be a scrap block if no rear access to the thread.

Apply ATMOS sealer to head bolt threads into the helicoils on re-assembly

Googling for ATMOS sealer doesn't return anything definitive it a generic name? A link to a particular brand would be handy.
I guess when these were built durability wasn't very high on the list of requirements a long way below knock em out as
fast as possible

If you're still having major problems, I might be able to ask for help from the other half's re-enactor friends - I think one or two may have had experience with jeeps (I know one who's restoring a Mutt).

At the risk of a thread hijack - how on earth did they get hold of a Mutt? The US govt has a department tasked with chopping them into pieces to stop themselves getting sued if the rear suspension winds up and kills someone.

I remember being on a coach going through southern Germany in early nineties and driving past a field - possibly half a mile long by several deep of Mutts. Cold War eh.

I'm sure his can be fixed, its only a thread at the end of the day and some decent anti freeze should stop it rotting again.

I think a lot of peple get old frames, chassis or whatever they can get their hands on, then buy parts a-plenty and rebuild the things from the ground up.

I´ve had two M151 A1 :s

- they came from Israel (IIRC) and Denmark, respectively. Both were NATO surplus and bought from a bulk surplus dealer in Holland. Cool stuff, apart from the front & rear ends (swing axles, just like VW Beetle). Lovely and comfortable "jeeps" IMHO.
