fitting new wings Q

Hi I am about to fit two new old stock front and rear wings.
The question is what is the best type of sealer to seal the wings to the body.
and both sides of the rear wing piping?????

dum dum is what used to be used
there is nothing on the wing piping as far as i know

most important thing is to make sure that the body and wing flanges are very well protected against rust.
The flange seams will get wet from above and below so any sealer will create a dead end for the water - if it gets trapped in the seam it's worse than having them not sealed. Therefore don't use sealer after fitting!
Dum dum has the advantage over sealer that it's 'thicker' (not sure if that's the right word) so that when used prior to fitting it will fill all the gaps.

except if you have to replace the rear wing at some point

Do not use filler as it will always split. We normally bolt on wings(painted on the backside), to a painted flitch mounting,smeared with grease, then seam seal the top edge with a wet on wet seam sealer, this version is very easy to smooth with your finger and a small amount of panel wipe, creating an invisible joint. Easily painted over when spraying the rest of the wing.
The rear wings only use wing beading, I would not use sealer on these. The earlier MM's and Series 11's used beading on the front wings as well as the rears.

Filler absorbs moisture and will cause the wing and main body of the car to rust along the join.

I used Dinitrol 3125 on all mating surfaces, then once it was all together I squirted more Dinitrol into the joins (from the top). Early days to tell if this is any good but I think it's a lot better than the original, which lasted quite well!

I've always used this stuff (well B&Qs own but similar).
Its a perfect substitute for dum dum imo. It never seats and allows joints to be seperated then stuck back together again in future.
The surface 'skins' just enough so you can touch it without getting mucky but you can still scoop/scrape it out should you ever need to.

Note: Roof/gutter sealant is totally different to normal black 'silicone sealer'.
Silicon window and bathroom type stuff is no use whatsoever.

It wont be to hold the complete wing on, it will be inbetween the wing and car. The standard bolts will still be used.

The body panel seam sealer is the best in my opinion (together with the usual panel bolts of course), as it is slightly flexible but stops any water penetration between panels. It also "paintable"

I used the gutter/roof sealer around the rear panel of the traveller as it ""squishes" down well and provides a second layer of defence against water after using dum dum to first fit the panels in place.

I found it was top gear for the front wings. But a pain for the back. The colour is light grey and if you put too much on and it squeezes out it’s quite a pain to get it off the paintwork. Then because it’s light grey, you can see it in places between the wing and piping and piping and body. This is then in a very difficult area to re-paint over it.
So on the other side I used the B&Q roof and gutter sealer. Much easer to work with and you can't see it between the joints as the car is Trafalgar blue and the piping is dark blue. In addition, it wipes off the paintwork easy. However, I sealed all the wings undersides with the seam sealer. [leaving the drains clear on the front wings]
I used one full tube and quarter of the second tube.

Glad I did a search before I asked the question. I was going to use the black roof and gutter sealant. Got mine from Travis Perkins. Dont like the idea of nothing but the piping in there. The piping wont stop water getting in, just looks nice.
