New Wiring

Post by boarswood »

Hello
I am trying to finish a project started by somebody else, and the electrics are a mess, everything seems to have been conected incorrectly

The speedo illuminates when the ignition is turned on, the ignition light comes on when you dim the headlights, no indicators, no rear lights, petrol gaige reads full when empty etc etc....

Would I be better starting again and fitting a complete new loom?

I am based in Newbury, Berks in case anybody wants to earn a few quid doing it!!! :P

You will need a Haynes Manual or BMC Manual to get the colour codes for each wire in each circuit. Disconnect the battery before you have a fire.

Take out each glove box, to allow access to wiring behind the speedo.

Trace each wire from source (light fitting etc) back to feed circuit and connect correctly. Re-connect battery to check circuits that have been wired correctly, then disconnect again as you move onto the next circuit. You may want to fit a temporary fuse into the battery feed (15 amp) to protect from fire.

Sounds as if some of the little lights have just been plugged in the wrong holes - that would sort out half the problems! then sort out the others one by one. You won't need a new loom!

Hi here is a LINK to a colour diagram.

Better than the original, I think.

This message board is like a family - you can't choose the other members!! But remember engine oil is thicker than water.

Yes - Barry's diagram makes it look very simple which in fact it IS!
