air cleaner

Post by XDB »

I am getting to the end of reconditioning my 1098cc engine and gearbox. I am unsure of a few details. have repainted the air cleaner, is the correct colour black? and where does the coopers decal go. The air cleaner is tear drop shape with the inlet pipe at the arrow end, there is also a spigot pipe. which way up is the decal. Is it read looking from the engine or to the engine and is it at opposite end to the inlet pipe the broad end or on the side. I hope this makes sense. Lastly and most important where is the best place to connect the end of the breather pipe which comes from the tappet cover. The engine came dismantled.

Stickers - need to wait for a Concours person to answer that!
The breather pipe connects to the little stub on the air cleaner. BUT - in doing so it dumps fume/oil all over the outside of the paper element - which soon clogs it up. If you have the later carb with the little brass inlet pipe on one side - this is a far better place for the breather pipe. Otherwise - it is possible to make a hole in the aluminium mounting plate for the filter such that the pipe can go in there - and thus the fumes are drawn directly into the airstream after the paper element thus saving it from being coated with oil!

thank you yet again. I found the brass spigot on the side of the carb, even though I have cleaned the carb it was blocked with a piece of rubber. I don't know if it was done deliberately or if a piece of breather tube has become detached, but it was well and truly stuck.

Probably done to block it - if the breather pipe not being used on the carb. Just gently twiddle a drill bit by hand to clear it.
