Can you get a Traveller with an automatic gear box, or fit 1

Post by sunova »

Hi,
After a bad motorcycle I can't ride my harley anymore so I have decided to go for a classic car.
I would really like a Traveller or a Pick-up variant but I now have a shoulder problem which means I need an automatic. I have been looking at the history of Morris 1000s but can find no mention of an automatic gearbox being fitted. Did Morris make one or can I get one fitted from another vehicle.

Thanks for your time,

D.

They were never factory fitted. I believe some other A series 1275 engined cars had them though, so if you can get hold of one and do the modifications, you have one :D There's a long thread on it somewhere - I'll have a look. Welcome aboard, btw

No, there was never one fitted as standard. People have in the past fitted an engine and box from an automatic Morris Marina but I believe they are harder to find than hen's teeth now.

Whoops, posted at the same instant as BigG. ;)

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Here's one of the previous threads about it - http://www.morrisminoroc.co.uk/index.ph ... =automatic

Try a 'search' for automatic, there are more

I've a duff left leg which means I also like auto's.
The autobox is easy to source - it's a BW65 and fitted to numerous vehicles.
The earlier BW35 has some of the operating mechanisms on the outside and thus is bulkier so it won't fit a Minor.
Problem is going to be sourcing the flexi plate, torque converter engine backplate and bellhousing off a post 76 Marina or Ital 1275.
Hens hind teeth is the best way of describing.
It took me ages to find one - and then over 300 miles away !
If I was going to collect parts to convert to auto again I'd seriously consider the far more common Ford 1300 Kent engine and C3 autobox.

Ford 1300 Kent engine and C3 autobox
That is the route I would go.

I haven't got around to doing the conversion yet (still struggling with another vehicle rebuild) so cann't show any pics of it in the car.
Do you mean the actual gear selection part of the gearbox as that'd be easy to take pics as I've two BW65 autoboxes lying around ?

Rosie Hamilton of the MMOC board runs a Traveller auto. You could try to contact her to see where the job was done.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

Ah, apologies, I thought you had fitted it. Wondered how well the gear selector looked in the car

The pulling power of a Turbo Diesel! The voices may not be real, but they have good ideas.

Here's one that's only done 300 miles - seems it was a present but the wife couldn't stand it (can't blame her) and so it was never used - but it's not an auto so not much use! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UNIQUE-1981-MORRI ... dZViewItem
