cleaning the engine

Post by dalebrignall »

i have just spent the day cleaning the engines on my families cars.i have applied degreaser with a parrifin gun, then brushed it in .used the parrifin gun with water to wash it off.then used the air jet gun thing to blast off the water, then i sprayed the engines with wd40 to get rid of any water left and put a nice shine and thin layer of oil on the engine .is this a good practice, thanks dale

Well all except the thin coat of oil. This will burn off and with modern cars, it might clog the pollen filter, and even cause the lambda sensor to give false reading to the ECU, if the oil fumes get taken into the air intake.

I changed the manifold studs on my Astra and was a bit generous with the copper slip and other lubes, my wife came home just as I was getting things up to temperature - she thought it was on fire there was that much smoke!

I hope it was Duckhams so it was at least a similar colour  .
If you were hoping it would keep rust off and keep things clean, it may stop the rust but it will pick up all the dust and dirt particles and make things worse than before.
Cheers
