Before I go and spend £40 on a complete set of new rings, does anyone know if i can just buy a set of oil rings.....in my ultimate wisdom i managed to break 2 today getting them out of the grooves (Doh!!). Its probably best to replace them anyway, they were completely cagged up with gunge and some horrible scaly rock solid concretion stuff which seems to be on a variety of surfaces in the engine.......
Cheers,
YG

You could always phone ESM or BM and see if they are willing to split sets of rings. But if there are caked on carbon bits around the engine, I would be cleaning everything up and replaceing the rings as a matter of course.
Wow - £40 just for rings ?? Have you priced a set of pistons and rings ? If the ring grooves are worn there is no point fitting rings anyway. You could try some of the Mini places for rings - Minisport/Minispares etc - same bore size as Mini 998. Note - the 998 pistons are no use to you - but the rings will be the correct bore size.
Ok, then 998 pistons will not work as the standard bore size is the same as a 948 +0.065" overbore. Good way to go if you need a bore? Can fit the rods as well, and get rid of the clamped little end.
If it's a 948 then indeed the upgrade to Mini 998 pistons on that +65 overbore will be worthwhile in the long run. But far better to just source a decent 1098 engine and use that.
meh, ive already bought most of the stuff i need for my 948....plus the bores (which are linered) are in excellent condition. Besides, everyone has a damn 1098!

Not used one myself - but i'm sure it's been discussed often and agree - it's a NO. If your bearings are good - and the engine is not suffering piston blow-by - the original 'scroll' seal is fine.
Not really, involves some precision engineering to fit correctly, and introduces an oil seal that can fail. A scroll seal will never wear out, and will not leak if everything is healthy.
Yes - a much better seal. Of course - if you go for the later Mini cover with bulge in the side then you can fit the timing chain tensioner device from the Mini for quieter running!
