Hub caps.

Post by smh582003 »

I was just wondering what do people use to get their hub caps off without scratching the paint on the wheels.
Can anyone help with this
Steve

Very Good Question.

I use a fork-style ball joint splitter.

The fork bits go under the rim of the cap and the thick handle rests against the wheel rim acting as a fulcrum point. One whack and ping off the hubcap flies.
Done quickly with no messing it wont scratch the paint.

Alu hubcaps are easy, its the 2 chrome ones I have that put up a real fight.
What would Macgyver do..?

A claw hammer is pretty good as well.

I use this too, or on occasions a claw hammer (the claw bit of course :))

Being a strong man I grab them with my finger tips and yank them off! It works every time and absolutely will not damage the rims.

The faded original ones I have aren't too bad; in fact the ones on Lintilla you probably could remove without a lever. The shiny pattern ones on Fenchurch are a stupidly tight fit. I struggle even using a claw hammer with a bit of wood as a fulcrum. When they do let go they go "sproing" and fire themselves across the drive.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.
